I have always been fascinated by graphics. As a young boy, I went to sleep with Mathematical Models by Cundy and Rollett under my pillow — a book of exquisitely strange physical forms, nets, and solids that felt like a secret language the universe was speaking just to me.

Spirograph was one of my favourite toys. There is something almost miraculous about the way rigid gears and a simple pen conspire to produce curves of such organic elegance. I spent hours on the floor, changing wheels, shifting holes, filling pages.

As a young man, I took that obsession to its logical extreme: a Ph.D. from Cambridge University in the mathematics behind these shapes — the geometry of curves, surfaces, and the algebraic structures that generate them.


Then, one day, the question no one else seemed to be asking finally became impossible to ignore:

What does Spirograph look like in three dimensions?

I made myself a cup of tea and got to work.


Now retired in Bangkok, Thailand — the Land of Smiles — I finally have the time, the tools, and the perspective to take what I learned and make it pretty.

Lucid Geometry is the answer to that question. It is the toy I wished I had as a child, the research I could not quite justify as a mathematician, and the retirement project that keeps my mind sharp and my evenings interesting.
